The Great Wall The great wall stretches for 5,500 miles and was built to fortify and defend China against its enemies. Construction began around the 5th century B.C. with the projects continuing under the first Emperor of China, around 220 B.C. and during the Ming Dynasty, 1368 to 1644. Most of the wall still stands today.
