Portrait of a Chick King Penguin chicks (Aptenodytes patagonicus) are born with a thick fur layer that protects them during their first year. As they molt the fur, the striking colors of King Penguins slowly appear from underneath. This chick, about 30 days old, was photographed on Salisbury Plain in South Georgia Island, a sub-antarctic region.
